  Newly open for tours, both self-guided and guided, the prison is huge and multi-layered historical gem. We visited in May 2017, and found ourselves pretty much with free rein to go anywhere within the complex - with a few understandable exceptions. The place has been left in the dilapidated condition which you would expect after five years of closure, and is all the better for it. The mould, the peeling paint, the old floor boards, all add to the authentic atmosphere. Plans to pull down wings and refurbish them sound horrendous, and I hope this doesn't come to fruition. Dating back to 1610 all the way through to its closure in 2013, so much has gone on here that the weight of the happenings here will stay with you long after leaving. A fabulous insight into England's heritage.
